JOJO’s Dark Chocolate Confections — Win the Space

Elevating the desirability of sweet snacking

JOJO’s came to us looking to make their brand appear more premium and ready for prime time. Their story and product mystique were being hidden on their previous packaging. Truly a unique product that blows the doors off nutritional snacking, we were amazed at how delicious the taste was. Our approach was simple — literally. Simplify the elements and let the flavor and the joy win the aisle.

JOJO’s — Snack Victoriously

M

Our process starts with understanding the client — where they are and where they want to be. In the case of JOJO’s, we uncovered a mother and son’s journey that paved the way to a chocolaty treat that was just as beneficial as some health bars but 100x more delicious. Relaying that message to their target audience became the focus of creating packaging that would increase brand visibility and invite new consumers to taste what a healthy snack could be.

Elevating the brand look, began with exploring and understanding where a brand like JOJO’s could own their category and space. We knew the product was good, the challenge was convincing an audience why they had to have it. From the onset, we believed that the photography, colors and textures used in the design had to be fun, engaging and spirited, just like the brand’s namesake. We had to capture the delight and joy that the product brought to those who tasted it and moreover leave an opening for further enhancement.

Expertise:

What we learned:
Eye-catching food photography doesn’t just make your product look delicious—it instantly grabs attention, sparks cravings, and drives impulse purchases by making a powerful first impression.

CHALLENGE:

The previous JOJO’s package leaned heavily into a simple presentation of product features and ingredients. Although the white background, minimal color and flavor cues offered a clean presentation, we believed a more dynamic on-shelf visibility would be beneficial. Existing product photography provided a straightforward view, but we felt we could make it more appealing for potential consumers. “Snack Victoriously” became the mantra for how we approached our changes.

SOLUTION:

After some initial concepts and revisions, we began utilizing the waves of Jojo’s hair as inspiration, we tie the brand name, tagline and product designation all together. By adding brighter colors and mouth-watering imagery for flavor cues we harness the consumer’s desire. The result was a package that engaged and delighted consumers to the tune of a 27% gain in brand recognition and a 24% gain in intent to purchase.

The Proof

When we design packaging, we’re creating a new window through which the brand is viewed and we must take care in evaluating how the changes are perceived by loyal customers as well as potential new customers. Our testing process is both quantitative and qualitative. We ask first for a “gut” reaction then dive deeper into the analytics of how and why people chose the way they do. With v we knew the design was right but would the buying public agree? Overwhelmingly, yes!

Photography so good you can taste it

CPG food packaging usually doesn’t allow for a consumer to look inside or sample the taste of a product. Very seldom do we see windows or viewports on these packages. In order for us to get the consumer’s mouth watering, so-to speak, special attention was spent on getting that perfect shot that makes it easy to decide which product is more appealing. In the case of JOJO’s we placed a lot of emphasis on getting that shot that flicked the craving switch. Our experience working with scent and flavor cues helps us to provide a sensory experience that visually creates flavor and aroma. In the examples below the viewer gets a sense that the taste would be the rewarding factor they hope for. A feeling that you can taste the rich, creamy peanut butter; hear the crunch of the pistachio nuts; smell the tropical sweetness of the coconut; feel the crispy, salty-sweet reward of the chocolate covered pretzel.

Come say hi. We'd love to meet you!
